The Manager – Clare Wheeler
From cake decorator to care manager – sometimes the best career moves are the unexpected ones.
I’m Clare Wheeler, and my path to becoming registered manager of Ashley House in Langport started in the most wonderful way. In early 2018, I walked into a local care home offering to volunteer and bake cakes with residents. A few weeks later, I was working there full-time – I simply couldn’t stay away.
Before discovering my passion for elderly care, I worked in children’s services and ran my own successful cake business. But there’s something magical about working with older adults that captured my heart completely.
Since joining Southwest Care Homes in October 2022, I’ve had the privilege of leading our beautiful Victorian home in the charming market town of Langport. We’re a cosy 22-bed residential dementia home, situated at the end of a tree-lined avenue with the River Parrett flowing nearby.
Ashley House has quite the history – it was originally a boutique bed & breakfast where many couples celebrated their weddings in our gorgeous garden. Now, we’re creating new kinds of celebrations and precious moments every day.
Having my own extended family helps me understand how important it is to support not just our residents, but their families too. This work is incredibly rewarding – there’s nothing quite like being part of someone’s journey and making their days brighter.
Come visit us and see why Ashley House feels like home to everyone who walks through our doors.
